Knight-Mozilla OpenNews, Punk Planet
Who are you, and what do you do?
I’m the director of the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews project. I also build stuff on the web and elsewhere, most notably I was the founder and editor of Punk Planet magazine (RIP) and also created the fantastical real-time story of @MayorEmanuel.
What podcasts do you listen to?
- Welcome to Night Vale: I am *obsessed* with this right now. It’s incredible storytelling that turns so many tropes on their heads. And they’re constantly reinventing what’s possible. Oh, what is this? It’s a fictional podcast that plays out as a radio news show from the town of Night Vale, which is sort of the center of supernatural phenomenon. It is amazing. Amazing amazing. The Sandstorm episodes completely blew my mind. But don’t listen to them first: really get a feel for it by starting at the beginning.
- 99% Invisible: Roman Mars. I could just leave it at that. He’s been putting together great radio for a while, but has come into his own with 99% Invisible, which claims to be about architecture and design but is really about the world we live in and how it gets made. I absolutely love this show. Listen to the episode about the invention of the Basketball shot clock: super great, and totally revelatory. That’s 99% Invisible at its best.
- Let’s Make Mistakes: Mike Monteiro might be a Grade-A Jerkoff, but he’s the anchor of a fantastic podcast about design, about entrepreneurship, and about being ethical people doing great work. Mike and Jessie have a great back-and-forth and they get interesting guests in to mix it up. If you care about design, about running your own business, or just being awesome, well worth a listen.
- Jordan, Jesse, Go: This podcast is about as old as the sands of time themselves at this point, but Jesse Thorn and Jordan Morris have never not made me laugh, often out loud, with every episode of this great banter-and-jokes podcast. It’s long–usually around an hour and a half–but consistently super entertaining.
How do you listen to podcasts?
I use Player FM on my HTC One, with great headphones, usually while out on a lengthy walk with my dog, unless she’s being an asshole.
