News editor at Giant Bomb
Who are you, and what do you do?
I’m Patrick Klepek, news editor at Giant Bomb and consumer of all things horror. Most people suspect I spend all day playing video games, but that’s not true. I mostly sit around hoping Skype doesn’t crash.
What podcasts do you listen to?
With some rare exceptions, none of them have to do with video games. It’s important to expose yourself to stuff outside your wheelhouse. That said, even I turn to professor Michael Abbott’s The Brainy Gamer for seriously informative academic discussions about games, and Idle Thumbs for regularly introspective dissections of the medium by a group of very funny developers. Mysterious Universe provides my weekly X-Files fix, The B.S. Report helps me participate in sports conversations where I’m out of my depth, The Political Gabfest scratches a liberal political itch, On the Media reminds me games writers aren’t the only ones who obsess over the role of the media, The Talk Show articulates my appreciation for Apple, and RadioLab reminds me podcasts can, indeed, be art. I assume I’m also the millionth person to recommend This American Life, which remains one of the high watermarks for journalism–period.
How do you listen to podcasts?
With Apple’s terrible podcast app that no one should ever use but works just enough to prevent me from paying money for something better. But I actually listen to podcasts when I’m running. It’s the one time my mind isn’t obsessed with my day job, and the perfect opportunity to quietly learn a little bit about the rest of the world.
